Being a doula/ birth assistant is a major commitment. Doulas/Birth Assistants arrange our lives to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on call two weeks before and two weeks after your due date. Many births are 14 hours or longer. Combine that with multiple hours of prenatal work,up to 2 hours of immediate postnatal time and 2-4 hours later of postpartum support and you can see that one birth can easily be 24 hours of work for a doula/Birth Assistant. No matter the cost, data shows that the benefits of having a doula in attendance at your birth are significant and lasting!
Belly binding is the art of wrapping a postpartum women's belly for physical support and to help hasten the recovery process after childbirth. This belly binding method consists into wrapping a 15-yard-long strip of cloth around the abdomen from the hips up to the rib cage. Women are traditionally wrapped as soon after birth as possible, ideally on day 2-5 and only between 2-6 weeks after a cesarean birth (depending on healing of the incision). It is then for 40 days or more (traditional practice). Various countries and cultures around the world use some form of belly binding to help support the postpartum healing process. It's recommended to wear a belly bind on the postpartum period for 6-10 hours per day for up to 30 days.
